Become an ACPS Substitute

Persons may apply for substitute teaching by initially completing an online application. Each subsequent year, substitutes are required to re-apply, complete their OSHA training online, and be approved by the Amherst County School Board for the upcoming academic year.

  • Qualifications:  Applicants must be of excellent moral character and possess characteristics and aptitudes that would make it possible for them to be successful in working with children and young adults. It is highly desirable that applicants have some type of recent experience with children; scouts, church, 4-H, etc.
  • School Board Approval: Once all steps of the application process are complete, the applicant’s name is presented to the School Board for approval at a School Board meeting.  In all cases, the School Board has the responsibility for approving applicants for substitute teaching.  Upon approval from the School Board, a letter will be mailed out to the applicant stating their approval to substitute for the remainder of the current school year.
  • Returning Substitutes: All returning substitutes will receive a returning substitute letter with paperwork after the conclusion of the school year. This paperwork must be completed and sent back to the Human Resources Office. All returning substitutes are also required to renew their OSHA training at the beginning of every school year to remain eligible to be a substitute. Returning substitutes who have a break in service OR who do not renew their paperwork and OSHA training by the end of September of the current year will have to reapply to be a substitute. This will include a new background check.

Substitute Requirements

  1. Online Application: All applicants must complete an online substitute application using the Join #TeamAmherst link.  Please note that ACPS requires all applicants to have three professional references for their application to be considered complete. The references section of the application instructs you to provide an email address for all of your references. This enables our application system to send a reference form to the email address provided for completion. Our office does not contact your references for you. It is the responsibility of the applicants to provide the references.
  2. Substitute Workshop: All applicants must attend a substitute workshop.
  3. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training: All applicants must use the following link to access and complete the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Training information
  4. Background Check: All new applicants are required to complete the ACPS background check. Background checks are conducted at the Human Resources Office located at the School Administration Office.  Background checks will not be processed when schools are closed or when there is inclement weather. The paperwork for the background check must be completed in the Human Resources Office.
  5. Required Documentation: All applicants must complete the required substitute paperwork listed below and submit to the Human Resources Office.  You can also pick up copies of these documents at the Human Resources Office located at the School Administration Office.
    1. Tuberculosis (TB) Test & Physician’s Certificate: A TB test is required for employment with the Amherst County Public Schools. If you have had a TB test in the past year, a copy of the results can be provided. If a recent TB test is over a year old, a new test will be required.  Please check local Walk-In Clinics or CVS Minute Clinic (Wards Rd location) for TB test availability.
    2. W-4 and VA-4: Complete these state and federal tax forms.
    3. I-9 Eligibility: Complete Only Section 1: Employee Information and Verification. Acceptable documents to bring in for verification are listed in the List of Acceptable Documents. These documents must be presented in their original form for verification purposes to Human Resources. Copies of these documents are not acceptable.
    4. Direct Deposit: Three options for direct deposit are available (direct deposit into a checking or savings account or direct deposit onto a reloadable visa pay card). A voided check (not a deposit ticket) or a direct deposit statement from your bank must be provided if you would like your pay deposited into a checking account. A direct deposit statement from your bank must be provided if you would like your pay deposited into a savings account. Additional paperwork will be provided if you select the pay card option.
